Albert Hala Obituary

Albert Eugene Hala passed away at age 89 on Thursday, August 13, 2020. Al was born in Cleveland on September 16, 1930 to Albert and Elsie Hala, and resided with his parents and younger brothers Robert T. and John J. in the E. 131st Street and Harvard Avenue area for more than 21 years. Al was the beloved husband of Dolores A. (Sutton) for 68 years, and the devoted and much loved father to Kathleen, Daniel (Susan, deceased), Nancy, and Alison (deceased). Al was also the proud grandfather of Deanna Otero (John), Alexander and Olivia Hayano, and Tonya Waite, and the great-grandfather of Branden Otero. He was predeceased by his brothers Robert and John, and nephew Albert.

In his early years, Al was a member of the Czech Sokol gymnastic organization, Sokol Greater Cleveland, and attended Czech language classes at the Jan A. Komensky Hall in the Mt. Pleasant area. He participated in exhibitions and recitals in both endeavors.

Al graduated from John Adams High School in 1949, and eventually earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) at Fenn College/Cleveland State University. Al later obtained Professional Engineer (PE) status to practice in Ohio, and as a PE, he enjoyed a long, successful and inventive career. He designed tools and dies for the automotive industries at Bunell Machine and Tool Co. and Centerline Inc. He participated in designs for heavy-duty fixtures and special machinery at TOCCO and McDowell-Wellman Co. Al also became the top sales engineer for Meier Transmission, Inc., where he specialized in the design, build and implementation of heavy-duty mechanical drive equipment. Several patents have been accredited to his name.

In 1983, he founded Mill & Motion Inc. (MMI), presently operating in Independence, Ohio. MMI is a company dedicated to the design, manufacture and repair of innovative, mill-type components. Al presided over MMI for 15 years before passing these duties to his son, Dan.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations in Al’s name be sent to Sokol Greater Cleveland, 4939 Broadway Ave, Cleveland, Ohio 44127. A private service will be scheduled at a later date.
